WE are fortunate to have a golden post box in Henley to mark the achievements of our Olympic rowers.

The box in Hart Street was repainted from the tradional red after the London Olympics in 2012, where three Leander Club athletes won gold medals — Alex Gregory and Pete Reed in the men’s coxless four and Anna Watkins in the women’s double scull.

Royal Mail decided to repaint a post box in all the towns where Team GB’s champions were born and had to make an exception with Henley beause none of the Leander rowers was actually born here.

Altogether, Leander athletes won 12 medals at London 2012, bringing the club’s Olympic medal tally over the years to 111. Needless to say, our golden post box has become something of a tourist attraction.
