THIS week’s curiosity comes from David Feary, of Walton Avenue, Henley, who says: “This old sign at the top of Clarence Road is unlikely to remain in place much longer.

“The interest lies in the four-digit telephone number advertised. I remember that before we moved to digital exchanges all the Henley numbers began with 57 as a prefix to these original four-digit numbers. Does anyone recall when the 57 was added?

“Someone told me once that Henley was the host to the very first telephone exchange with operators connecting callers by physically plugging their lines together.

“This was situated on the top floor of the old post office in Reading Road. It would be interesting to learn something of its history.”
