ALTHOUGH it’s a reasonable size and fixed on an exposed area of brickwork facing the road, this curiosity in Wargrave is almost always overlooked.

At the bottom of Wargrave Hill, close to where the road originally led to Crazies Hill and now known as The Bothy, is this iron cross shaped like the religious symbol.

It marks the spot where a horse rider was killed when her horse bolted while descending the steep hill.

There is no accompanying plate to explain the details, date or the name of the deceased but perhaps a reader who is an expert in local history will be able to supply more information.
