Guide books mention Shenstone’s poem scratched across a window in 1750 and the many famous people who have stayed there.

The guests included Charles I, who stayed three times — in 1642 and 1646 while travelling and again in 1646 as a  fugitive.

Three years later he was tried, convicted and executed for high treason.
