I HOPE that I’m not speaking too soon but it seems that we may have escaped any flooding this winter.
This has certainly not always been the case. These old flood plates at Mapledurham Lock show a marker for when the river rose right over the high wall of the lock back in 1894. Two other plates mark the highest points of the floods in 1947 and 2003.
Alongside is a display of old paddles which were used until fairly recently to hold back or let free the water flow in one of the adjoining weirs.
It is really difficult to imagine the sight of the Thames coming right over the top of the weirs as well.
