HENLEY 1sts maintained their MBBO Division 1 promotion chances with a 9-0 thrashing of local rivals Wycombe 1sts at Jubilee Park on Saturday.
The visitors were blown away in the opening third of the match by an intense Henley display. The home side put the Wycombe defence and midfiled under intense pressure, forcing numerous misplaced passes, creating turnover high up the field, allowing waves of quick attacks and the forwards duly delivered with some fine finishing.
After squandering a couple of early chances the home side opened the scoring on eight minutes with a close range scrambling effort from Geoff Joseph after a flowing attack down the right flank.
The next four goals came at regular and short intervals after that Chris Green grabbed a brace, one a sublime strike from the top of the circle, Richard Woolfrey shrugged off a defender to score while Jody Measures finished off the move of the match which saw Henley go the full length of the pitch with swift passing ending up with Measures unmarked at the far post with the simplest of finishes.
It was a startling 15 minutes of hockey and killed the game as a contest. The midfield group of Joyce, Hibberd, Foster, Hetherington and Taylor dominated the middle of the park and squeezed the Wycombe defence with intensity forcing the turnovers and this was backed up by good movement amongst the forward line which meant once the ball was won it could be moved quickly into the final third to create the chances.
