HENLEY COLLEGE hockey player Liam Sanford recently attended an event for elite athletes hosted by Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Ambassador and six-time Olympic gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy.
Forty-two of the 50 SportsAid athletes on SSE’s Next Generation programme had the chance to meet Sir Chris at a training and mentoring workshop held in Loughborough.
Over the next four years energy giant SSE has committed to support the development of 50 SportsAid athletes on the programme. Each athlete will receive funding and mentoring in a bid to help fulfil their full sporting potential and create a living legacy for sport.
The athletes received expert advice on nutrition, anti-doping, media interviews and how to use social media. They also attended a mentoring session hosted by Olympic silver medalist Leon Taylor with SSE Home Nation Ambassador for Northern Ireland Sally Brown, who competed at the London 2012 Paralympics.
To-date Sanford’s achievements include representing England at U18 level and being named player of the tournament in the Four Nations competition and winning the U18 Futures Cup at club level.
