England’s late deflection enough to retain crown

Henley Ladies 1sts 4 Didsbury Greys 3

HENLEY Ladies netted a goal in the last minute to become the first club to retain the England Hockey Investec Trophy at Nottingham on Saturday.

In a thrilling seven-goal encounter, Henley found themselves trailing 3-2 with just four minutes of the match remaining. The amber and blues then dug in to net two goals to make history.

Henley dominated the early stages of the first half. Despite not converting a short corner won after just two minutes, Emma Hedges got her name on the score sheet soon after by deflecting a ball that had been passed across the D to her waiting on the post.

Henley continued to pile on the pressure as Jem Barham and Lou England enjoyed space in the centre midfield to drive up the pitch and look for strikers Serena Hickman, Kiera Halloran and Katie Butler on the base line, but the Didsbury defence thwarted their chances at goal.
