Amber and blues get new year off to winning start

HENLEY LADIES 3rds ran out comfortable winners against local rivals Maidenhead in their first match of the year.

HENLEY LADIES 3rds ran out comfortable winners against local rivals Maidenhead in their first match of the year.

Henley started this match with the forwards immediately pressurising the Maidenhead midfield. Following a quick free hit to Henley the defence joined in the push with Sarah Drummond splitting the field and sending a ball into the Maidenhead circle. Taking the defence by surprise the ball was deflected towards goal with the keeper only able to tip it into the corner for an own goal.

Henley continued to pressure with a number of short corners being gained but with the home team unable to take further advantage.

Maidenhead began to build up possession but another display of quick passing with constant running off the ball to create space saw Karen Roseff open up the defence and she selflessly distributed the ball for Belinda Potts to knock in Henley’s second goal.

In the second half Henley began to hang back off the ball and with some freedom Maidenhead began to gain some advantage and drive forward.

A number of short corners was awarded to Maidenhead but Nicky Hardy in goal was equal to their attempts and made some fine saves and clearances.

Another quick break with some fine interplay and one-two passes opened up the Maidenhead midfield and resulted in another sublime weave splitting the defence from Karen Roseff. Again a deft pass to Potts left the keeper wrong-footed but drew a foul on her while attempting to again slot the ball home. The penalty flick was converted. Tilly Hansen delivered a number of effortless crosses from wide which Henley were unable to capitalise on while Katie Butler pressured the Maidenhead team and stole possession with Lauren White and Sophie Ashton holding the wide positions to enable the amber and blues to exploit space while linking up the play.

With all the possession Henley again broke up the Maidenhead team and another goal similar to the second was delivered.

Towards the end of the match Maidenhead attacked the Henley defence with everything resulting in numerous short corners but they were denied a score.

Henley Ladies 3rds: Nicky Hardy, Sarah Evans, Diana Wise, Caz Stanway, Sarah Drummond, Kath Evans, Val Woods, Lauren White, Sophie Ashton, Katie Butler, Karen Roseff, Belinda Potts, Tilly Hansen.
