Potts goal enough to sink High Wycombe

HENLEY commenced the second half of their league season with a narrow victory over High Wycombe last Saturday.

HENLEY commenced the second half of their league season with a narrow victory over High Wycombe last Saturday.

With the team making four changes due to injuries a restructured midfield took a time to settle.

With the defence soaking up the pressure the forwards had little opportunity to drive forward. Nicky Hardy was called into action repeatedly making fine saves from both open play and short corner strikes.

In the second half Tilly Hansen drove the ball forward only to be beaten in a tackle. Hansen fought back, wining the ball and playing a pass into the circle which Belinda Potts managed to touch into the goal.

With one goal separating the two teams the game opened up. Wycombe pushed forward and leaving their attack high the midfield opened up and eventually the forwards found the room to exploit using the wide wings to drive into with the midfield playing their supporting role.

Sarah Evans and Kate Forster played some good channelling and tackling interplay with the midfield while Val Woods held the ball up and at times made weaving runs to lay the ball off to the forwards.

With Hansen and Karen Roseff running wide to collect the ball and distribute, the game remained close without any further opportunities to widen the gap.

Henley Ladies 3rds: Nicky Hardy, Kate Forster, Diana Wise, Sarah Drummond, Sarah Evans, Joules Smith, Lauren White, Val Woods, Claire Clark, Tilly Hansen, Phillipa Brown, Belinda Potts, Karen Roseff.
