Green’s double moves side top of table

HENLEY 4ths moved to the top of the MBBO Division 10 West table thanks to a convincing win over Newbury

HENLEY 4ths moved to the top of the MBBO Division 10 West table thanks to a convincing win over Newbury and Thatcham at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

Fielding their youngest ever team of players with eight under the age of 16, Henley found themselves against a similarly young team from Newbury and Thatcham.

Henley started a little tentatively and the first half was a tale of what might have been with 90 per cent of the game played in the Newbury and Thatcham half but wave after wave of Henley attacks floundering on the twin rocks of the Newbury and Thatcham experienced centre half and centre back.

Straight from the start of the second half Henley attacked down the left wing and a cross from Archie Clark found Ian Rechner whose cross-goal pass found Ewan Watkins at the back post to score.

Two minutes later Henley were 2-0 up, a similar attack this time down the right with good play from Nico Cheesman resulted in Andy Green finding himself unmarked at the top of the D and slotting home a reverse stick shot.

Now playing with more control and passing the ball effectively Henley were beginning to show what they were capable of and soon after an accurate passing move down the right from Rupert Wiseman and Elliot Wise saw Green score his second and Henley’s third goal.

The remainder of the game fizzled out with Henley in full control failing to exploit the wide spaces and again reverting to through-the-middle play and hitting the strong Newbury and Thatcham midfield.

Newbury and Thatcham made one last concerted attempt to get a consolation goal but were thwarted by debutant keeper Taylor Tudgay making a solid start and keeping a clean sheet.

Henley 4ths: Taylor Tudgay, James Rechner, Martyn Watkins, Huw Widgery, Liam Peachey, Rupert Wiseman, Elliot Wise, Ian Rechner, Archie Clark, Ewan Watkins, Andrew Green, Nico Cheesman.
