Hughes-Burne’s goal brings side early Christmas present

HENLEY maintained their unbeaten MBBO Division 2 record with a narrow victory away at West Hampstead last Saturday.

HENLEY maintained their unbeaten MBBO Division 2 record with a narrow victory away at West Hampstead last Saturday.

The visitors started with urgency and commitment whilst West Hampstead looked nervous.

Late in the first half West Hampstead penetrated the away defence with a freak goal against the run of play. A through-ball took a huge deflection off a West Hampstead stick and looped over keeper Foggoa into the top left corner.

For the visitors both forwards Hughes-Burne and Maidlow went close with one-on-ones, the latter hit the post with a swivelling reverse-stick shot.

With 15 minutes of the match remaining Richardson and man-of-the-match Matt Herbert combined well to provide Maidlow with an opportunity to dink the ball on to an opponent’s foot. A pinpoint Draycott short corner stopped by the captain was accurately slapped by Roberts towards Maidlow at the far post, who wrong footed the opposition to equalise.

Soon after Richardson provided a cutting through-ball for Hughes-Burne to latch on to and unleash a shot that went in at the near post to earn Henley all three points.

Henley 2nds: Alex Price, Matt Herbert, Jack Draycott, Jeremy Hughes-Burne, Chris Maidlow, Ryan Foggoa, Cass Cheeseman, Harvey Richardson, Ian Roberts, Rowan Austin, James Wood.
