McCooke at the double for Shiplake College

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE 2nds edged out rivals Pangbourne in a closely-fought match at Reading Hockey Club.

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE 2nds edged out rivals Pangbourne in a closely-fought match at Reading Hockey Club.

The first half was evenly matched with end-to-end attacking play from both sides.

Defensively, Shiplake were sound thanks to the combined efforts of Harry Rees, Harry Emmanuel, Jason Chan and Chris Baker. This ensured that Pangbourne posed no real threats. In attack, Shiplake created a couple of chances but failed to find the back of the net.

The second half started in a similar vein until Tom McCooke poked in a scrambled cross from close range. Buoyed by this success, Shiplake started to knock the ball around with much greater confidence with Charlie Marsden and Henry Atkinson providing some telling balls up to the forwards.

McCooke scored again with a reverse stick shot from the top of the D with only 10 minutes left to play.

Orla Brown made history for the school by becoming the first girl to represent Shiplake’s first team. Brown turned in an impressive display with her composure and intelligent running earning her the player of the match award. Despite her efforts, Brown ended up on the losing side as Pangbourne claimed a 2-0 victory.
