A GOAL by Serena Hickman ensured England Hockey Trophy holders Henley progressed to the quarter-finals of this year’s competition on Sunday.
Folkstone started the quicker of the two sides and it was thanks to a sharp save by keeper Hannah Lavish that Henley didn’t go behind.
Returning to the short ball game Henley soon managed to regain control of the match and it wasn’t long before the Folkestone goalkeeper was being asked to make save after save from sustained home attack.
At the other end the Henley defence were keeping the opposition attacks to a minimum.
With 10 minutes to go in the first half Henley made the breakthrough when they were awarded a short corner. Kath Draycott directed captain Herbert to return the ball to the injector, Emma Walker, who crossed smartly for Hickman to finish.
The second half turned into a frantic affair as Folkestone threw everything at Henley in an attempt to equalise and it was only the fine goalkeeping by Lavis that kept Henley’s lead intact.
Henley now face North Notts in the quarter finals. The match is scheduled to be played at Jubilee Park on Sunday, February 22 with a 1pm pushback.
