Final day defeat leads to Henley missing out on title
HENLEY, who gained promotion to the Premier Division of the South League last week, missed out
HENLEY, who gained promotion to the Premier Division of the South League last week, missed out on the title as they went down 5-3 away to West Hampstead in their final match of the season on Saturday.
The match started well for Henley, as the visitors carved out numerous chances.
Henley went in front on 20 minutes when Geoff Joseph’s inspired effort through his own legs flew past the West Hampstead goalkeeper.
Despite a series of short corners Henley were unable to double their lead and the score remained 1-0 at half-time.
The second half proved to be a much more open encounter which suited the home side.
Despite goals from Luke Gupta and Ross Hibberd, which put Henley into a 3-2 lead with just 15 minutes of the match remaining, the amber and blues looked tired and were second best for much of the half. The home team showed plenty of desire to win the match and netted twice more to defeat the amber and blues.
Although Henley were unable to take home the league title, the amber and blues have plenty to celebrate as they will be competing at the highest level in the club’s history next season.
