A GOAL from Georgie Metcalfe earned Henley Ladies all three points away at league leaders Hampstead
A GOAL from Georgie Metcalfe earned Henley Ladies all three points away at league leaders Hampstead and Westminster last Saturday.
In an evenly fought contest Henley started the match with their defensive unit working hard to keep the lines together, marshalled by centre back Kath Draycott, and with the aggressive tackling of Mel Joyce and reach of Kat Green who ensured nothing got through.
Most of the play was in the centre of the pitch, being kept out of the way of the goals, but Henley did face a few defensive short corners, one of which saw Rachel Herbert being called into action to make a goal line save.
In the second half Henley were able to gain some advantage themselves and in a period of play that saw the ball driven down the left hand side of the pitch and into the goal area, it was captain Metcalfe to who the ball fell. Amongst a melee of players feet and sticks, Metcalfe was able to redirect the ball and slot it inside the right hand post, just out of the keepers reach to give the amber and blues the lead.
Despite further attempts on both goals, and an injury to the head of Metcalfe, Henley were able to hold on to the win.
Other results on the day have left Henley fifth position in the league with just two points separating the top five places.
