Gaze brace helps amber and blues complete fight back

HENLEY 2nds hit back to secure all three points from their home match with Eastcote 3rds last Saturday.

HENLEY 2nds hit back to secure all three points from their home match with Eastcote 3rds last Saturday.

The visitors took the lead when they were able to exploit space in between the Henley midfield and defence, and soon opened the scoring from some impressive individual work by their centre forward.

Soon after the score was doubled through some lacklustre defensive co-ordination. The traffic wasn’t all one way as Henley were able to make occasional inroads into the visitors’ defensive line.

Henley pulled a goal back after Terry Pollard’s looping reserve stick shot from the right found the top corner of the Eastcote net.

Early in the second half some surging work down the right by captain Dan Herbert produced a penalty corner which was slotted home by Tony Gaze after some untidy defending.

Eastcote hit back to score their third of the game which forced the hosts to take the attack to the visitors.

Further good work along the Eastcote baseline by Herbert saw his pass to the unmarked John-Joe Cottam on the far post intercepted but obligingly turned into the net for an own goal to level the scores.

Chances came and went at both ends to keep the scores level. Gaze proved his worth with an awkward deflected clearance at one end while Cottam squandered a sliding chance at the other.

Good work by Guy Harmer on the right wing turned an unthreatening position on the edge of the D into a penalty corner from which Eastcote failed to clear their lines and this scrappy defending presented Gaze with his second goal of the game to put the hosts ahead. Five minutes later Cottam latched on to a powerful clearance well into the opposition half and he found Richard Woolfrey in space with just the keeper to beat which he did at the second time of asking to make it 5-3.

Henley 2nds: D Bowyer, A Gaze, S Hall, A Slay, J Measures, D Herbert, G Harmer, G Ruggiero, J-J Cottam, J Draycott, F Newbold, R Woolfrey, I Roberts, T Pollard.
