HOSTS Henley, playing their first match of the year due to the previous week’s game being postponed, lost out by a narrow margin against high-flying Spencer at Jubilee Park.
The visitors started the game brightly, dominating possession and territory for the first 15 minutes but the Henley defence held firm with comfortable saves from Roy Cox, some effective penalty corner defence and good diving tackles from Robbie Mortimer.
Henley grew into the game and had their own penalty corner opportunity, with the sideboard thwarting Gupta. Deep into the first half Spencer managed to develop an overload down their left hand side and a well worked move saw a cross to the far post tipped in by a Spencer player to put the visitors ahead.
In the second half Spencer continued with the lion’s share of possession but Henley looked threatening on the break on numerous occasions.
With a few minutes remaining Ed Foster launched a volley that forced the Spencer goalkeeper to pull off a fine save to deny the hosts a share of the spoils.
