HENLEY Ladies 1sts picked up a South Clubs’ Division 3A point from their 2-2 match with Eastcote at Jubilee Park last Saturday.
Going into the match Henley were boosted by key players returning to the squad as well as new additions.
The match got off to a fast start with Henley taking firm control. A disciplined and patient approach saw them create numerous opportunities and if it wasn’t for the quality of the Eastcote goalkeeper they would have had several goals by half-time.
Eventually the hosts got the breakthrough they deserved with two minutes left of the first half to play. Good work from the defence saw Henley overturn the ball and a smart pass from Kat Green to Hannah Jeremy put the opposition on the back foot. Jeremy in turn played a good through ball for captain Georgie Metcalfe to sprint on to and as she approached the circle some smart movement from the forward freed up space for the returning Louisa England to slot the ball home from Metcalfe’s pass.
Henley let their concentration slip and from the restart Eastcote went straight up the other end and scored from a miss-hit shot just before half-time.
The second half saw the same pattern emerging as Henley continued to pressure Eastcote but the visiting goalkeeper kept them at bay.
Against the run of play Eastcote hit a hopeful ball into the circle which came off a Henley stick and went into the goal to put the visitors ahead.
The remainder of the game saw Eastcote sit back and see the game out but Henley kept pressing and eventually equalised from a well worked penalty corner, converted by Jem Barham, with the last touch of the match to earn a point.
England was named the hosts player-of-the-match in a game that saw Meg Moran have a good debut for the amber and blues.
Elsewhere Henley Ladies 3rds went down to a 1-0 defeat away to Abingdon Pilgrims Ladies in Division 2 of the Trysports Three Counties League.
