Glass sculptures and functional pieces

ORCHARD Dene have kilns in their studio and rent a hot shop in Stourbridge to blow

ORCHARD Dene have kilns in their studio and rent a hot shop in Stourbridge to blow hot and hot work glass.

This they combine with the recycled Dartington glass to make sculptural and functional pieces.

Their work varies from lost vegetable cast garlics at seven centimetres to modular sculptures, some two metres tall. Prices range from £25 for a small bowl to around £2,000 for the larger sculptures.

The “Meltwater” series of work is based on the affinity of glass with ice and water, in the context of climate change.

Orchard Dene are also making a more light-hearted group of vases called Jelly Pots. This is because they started off the colour of jelly beans! Now gold and silver leaf are being utilised.

Over the years, Anne at Orchard Dene has accumulated a considerable amount of work that is perhaps seconds, or the last of a group of work. This year these will be offered at a very reduced price, so do have a rummage.

There are also shows coming up such as Assendon Glass Workshop this bank holiday weekend (April 30 to May 2). As part of Oxfordshire Artweeks there is also Turrill Sculpture Garden from May 7 to 22 — located behind Summertown Library — and Ewelme Pottery from May 13 to 22.
