Village war book on sale

Village war book on sale
A MAN from Hambleden has written a book about the 46 men from the village who died in the First World War.

Chris Whitehead, a retired chartered accountant, started writing Lads, You’re Wanted in October and spent eight months researching the men’s lives.

He closely follows three of the soldiers, Brian Molloy, Alfred Dawson, and William Gater, from their early years in the village until their deaths in the conflict.

Mr Whitehead, who lives in Pheasants Hill with his wife Jo, said: “The book is about what life was like in the parish in 1914 and then moves on to the men whose names are on the war memorial. It took a lot of work researching everything and I tried to do as much original work as possible. I had access to the old village magazines from the time and the headmaster’s log from the village school.

“I also spoke to several of the elderly people in the village who had relatives in the war. It was a lot of fun.”
