Revealing rector

THE TV series Midsomer Murders has plenty of fans but it seems its former leading man found it somewhat formulaic.

Once, during a break in filming an episode at St Nicholas’s Church in Remenham, an admirer called out to star John Nettles and asked how his day was going.

The actor, who played the main character DCI Tom Barnaby, is said to have shot back: “Another day, another church, another body.”

The anecdote was shared by Rev Canon Martyn Griffiths, the rector of Henley with Remenham, as he launched the eighth Henley Choir Festival at St Mary’s Church in Henley on Saturday.

Sharing his memories of the event, he fondly recalled being asked to help set it up by “mad mayor” Elizabeth Hodgkin in 2009.

After a short pause, he added: “I’d like to make clear that I’m spelling that M-A-Y-O-R.”
