Crickettes breathe new life into music of a Shadows legend

IT was a great opportunity for a young musician. Guitarist Zoe McCulloch was only 11 when she was talent-spotted by original Shadows bass player Jet Harris.

He was so impressed that a girl could play the legendary band’s music that he invited her to accompany him on a track — Here I Stand — for an album.

Now Zoe recreates the late musician’s music with her all-girl band the Crickettes, who will play a charity concert in his memory at the Kenton Theatre in July to raise money for cancer research.

Zoe says: “I was at home in Newcastle on a Sunday and Pat Terrett [now my manager] phoned to say he had someone who wanted to speak to me. It was Jet! He wanted me to record with him. I naturally said yes and started practising. I went down to Wales and went into the Famous Studios in Cardiff. What a band Pat and Jet had put together!

“Cliff Hall had done the arrangement as he had for so many Shadows records. Another former member of the Shadows, Alan Jones, was on bass.
