Inspired by abbey

READING Abbey has been out of bounds for a while bu recent news that its Heritage Lottery Fund bid for renovation has passed the first hurdle has sparked renewed interest in it.

Reading Bach Choir has commissioned a new work based on a text from the Abbey’s medieval manuscript collection from composer Gabriel Jackson.

He chose a poem by Wordsworth to weave into the Latin text and the resulting piece will feature in their summer concert to be held on Saturday, July 5 at St James Church, Abbot’s Walk in Reading.

The programme also includes Tormis’ St John’s Day Songs written for Midsummer’s Eve, and Steve Martland’s piece Summer Rounds written for the Newbury Spring Festival in 1999.
