King of dirty jazz at Goring

MUSICIAN TJ Johnson is considered one of the UK’s finest jazz singers, but describes himself as the “King of dirty jazz, backroom swing, rhythm and blues”, writes Lesley Potter.

He is often to be seen swaggering his stuff at venues like London’s Ronnie Scott’s, but he brings his R&B band to local audiences at Goring village hall in February as one of the stars in this year’s Goring Hall Jazz Society line-up.

Born in 1969 in Cheltenham, TJ started to take an interest in the family’s upright piano at the age of about eight. He spent hours listening to jazz and country music from his parents’ LP collection, and also learned guitar. He claims Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, BB King and Nina Simone as among his greatest influences. Tickets for the gig on Friday, February 8 available from Inspiration, Goring High Street or call Bill on (01491) 875758.
