Guitar maestro at local church

CLASSICAL guitarist John Williams is back in Wallingford next week for a rare solo concert.

CLASSICAL guitarist John Williams is back in Wallingford next week for a rare solo concert.

The maestro, most famous for his work on the Hollywood film The Deerhunter, will play at St Mary’s Church on Thursday, May 2.

Organiser Tom Povey said: “This is actually John’s second visit to Wallingford. He played last year with John Etheridge and liked the venue so much that he asked to come back.”

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Williams was taught to play guitar by his father and went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London.

He has since tourned many countries, playing both solo and with orchestras. He has collaborated with many famous musicians, including Julian Bream, Andre Previn and Cleo Laine. His repertoire ranges from baroque and Spanish classics to more contemporary innovative works.
