SINGER Totie Southwell has reached the area final of the Open Mic UK competition.

SINGER Totie Southwell has reached the area final of the Open Mic UK competition.

She was ranked top in her age group at the regional final after performing her own song Holding On.

Miss Southwell, 22, from Aston, was up against 10 other hopefuls in the over-21s section of the contest, held at the Sub 89 nightclub in Reading. More than 30 friends and relatives were there to support her.

She said: ?I was talking to someone when they announced the winner and only realised when they said, ?Didn?t you hear that? You?ve just won?. It was very unexpected but it was a great feeling. It?s nice to know my music is appreciated and people like it.?

The area final will take place on November 24 when she could qualify for the national final in London. The overall winner will receive £5,000 to develop their career.

Miss Southwell, a former pupil of Shiplake College, said: ?The area final is almost the last step so I guess it?s quite intimidating. I rehearse every day but I will need to decide which song I want to perform and really practise until I feel I?ve nailed it.?

She wrote Holding On for a film about Alzheimer?s disease.
