Pair of turkeys who escape dinner table

THIS is one turkey that didn’t make it on to the dinner table this Christmas.

Frank belongs to Stella Brown, a farmer from Ipsden, who gave me this photograph of her bird in a Santa hat.

When I gently enquired whether Frank would be on her Christmas Day menu, Stella replied: “Oh no, he’s married.”

Frank and his wife Jessica arrived at the farm four years ago as a gift but Stella and her family couldn’t face the thought of eating the pair, preferring to buy their Christmas turkey from a supermarket.

Since then the birds have been making themselves at home in a wooden house built for them by Stella’s husband complete with an electric fence around it to keep foxes out.

Frank and Jessica are fed mixed corn and given an occasional treat of dry mealworms.

Stella says Frank is a “friendly old boy” and that he and his “wife” get on well. “Frank is a gentleman to Jessica,” she laughs. “He only makes a fuss and starts gobbling when he hears or sees a Land Rover, which is odd because he is fine with other motors.”

Perhaps recognising her fortuitous position, Jessica has laid nearly 100 eggs this year, which Mrs Brown has pickled and given away as presents.

Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving.
