Makeover for lane

A VOLUNTEER group from Whitchurch has been given £8,000 to revive a run-down street.

A VOLUNTEER group from Whitchurch has been given £8,000 to revive a run-down street.

Oxfordshire County Council awarded the grant to Whitchurch-on-Thames Habitat Study Group so it can improve Hardwick Road.

The single-track lane, which joins the B471 High Street to the north of Whitchurch, is prone to flooding.

Its grass verges have also been wrecked by drivers pulling over for oncoming traffic.

The volunteers will use the money to hire a contractor to install new drains and a passing space.

Meanwhile, they are clearing overgrown hedges and building a new footpath alongside the road.

Treasurer Sally Woolhouse said: “It should begin to regain its attractive country-lane feel and look less like a rural race track.”
