SIX volunteers braved a snow storm to take part in a street-cleaning day in Watlington on Sunday.

The event, organised by Watlington in Bloom, began with volunteers meeting at the parish office.

They cleaned street signs as well as the white gates at the town’s entrance.

Terry Jackson, group co-ordinator, cleaned the signs and bricks at the roundabout.

She said: “It was nice to do something that you can look back on. It was good work and everything looks much better.

“People saw us do the street cleaning so hopefully it will encourage others.” Groups of residents will be able to adopt an area such as an alleyway or an open space as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s “It’s Your Neighbourhood” Group and a path-clearing team will weed paths and alleys around the town.

Other plans ahead of the Britain in Bloom judges’ visit this summer include planting community herb gardens.

More volunteers are needed for Watlington in Bloom’s open gardens day on June 30.

Residents who are willing to open their gardens should call Mrs Jackson on (01491) 613362 or email her at tjacks@waitrose.com
