Careless dog owners could be named

DOG owners who allow their pets to foul Watlington recreation ground could be named and shamed.

A new clampdown is being discussed by the Watlington pavilion and sports field committee after the installation of a dog waste bag dispenser and signs to encourage owners to be more responsible failed to stop the problem.

Chris Allen, secretary of the sports club, says he was “appalled” by dog owners who persistently failed to clear up after their animals.

He said: “I do a lot of work at the recreation ground in the spring and summer months and I’ve noticed that the problem is getting worse.

“It’s something I feel very strongly about. Yes, it’s dirty but it’s more about the fact that kids are running around in the summer and there are diseases within dog mess.”

He said one dog walker was so fed up with the mess at the ground last week that she collected and disposed of waste which had been left by other people’s pets.

Mr Allen said: “There are a lot of very responsible dog owners but there is a minority who ruin it for the majority and catching them is not easy. It all comes down to being in the right place at the right time. We are going to be very vigilant and will be up there at different times of the day on different days.”

He said he would take photographs or film offenders for use as evidence in a prosecution or in other ways.

Last year, councillors considered banning dogs from the recreation ground or asking owners to keep their animals on leads.
