Hazardous tree to be cut back

A WILLOW tree near the entrance of the Cuckoo Pen in Benson is to be pollarded.

A WILLOW tree near the entrance of the Cuckoo Pen in Benson is to be pollarded.

Parish councillors have agreed to spend up to £960 on the work following advice from a tree surgeon.

Councillor Dave Rushton, chairman of the recreation and lands group, said: “It is a hazard to the footpath that goes through it and with high winds it could be bad.”

Eleven trees along the footpath through Millbrook Mead have also been identified as needing attention.

Cllr Rushton said: “This year we have got no choice but to do emergency work but the plan is to start a tree maintenance programme in the next financial year. We will then try to save what we have got and preserve it.”

Elsewhere, a 50ft ash tree in Rivermead was cut down last week.

The tree was due to be cut down in August following safety concerns but the work had to be delayed as birds were nesting in it.
