A GRADE II listed obelisk in Henley needs refurbishment.

A GRADE II listed obelisk in Henley needs refurbishment.

The town council could include the cost in its preliminary budget for next year after the condition of the stone piece in Mill Meadows was mentioned by a judge from the Green Flag award scheme.

A report to the council’s recreation and amenities committee said that repairs and cleaning were required to prevent further deterioration of the stonework.

One estimate of £4,800 plus VAT had been received and two more quotes would be sought.

Councillor Kellie Hinton suggested that more should be done to promote the obelisk, saying: "I know we don’t like too many signs but it is heritage and history."

Liz Jones, the council’s accountant, suggested budgeting up to £15,000 for tree maintenance.

She said most of the current budget was spent on surveys and remedial works on a reactive basis.
