Wildlife meadow

A WILDLIFE meadow and pond are to be created in Dunsden.

A WILDLIFE meadow and pond are to be created in Dunsden.

South Oxfordshire District Council has approved plans for the development on land near Dunsden Farmhouse.

The pond will be 12.8m long and 7.5m wide with a water depth of up to about  2.4 metres.

The planning application said: “The meadow and pond would visually enhance the natural beauty of the area in a manner entirely in sympathy with its existing ponds and landscape generally.

“It would assist and support conservation and biodiversity by providing a natural habitat for insects, amphibians and birds which require access to good quality aquatic systems as well as for a range of native aquatic and semi-aquatic plant species.

“The creation of new ponds is a stated objective of the Habitat Action Plan for Ponds for the UK, produced for HM Government by the UK Biodiversity Partnership.

“In Britain, although numbers are now rising slightly, recent evidence suggests that ponds may still be declining in quality at a national level with a combination of pollution and isolation the most likely causes.’

The application was supported by Eye and Dunsden Parish Council.
