Nettlebed down league leaders in final quarter

NETTLEBED STINGERS secured an impressive win against league leaders Dark and Stormy.

NETTLEBED STINGERS secured an impressive win against league leaders Dark and Stormy.

It was not without trepidation that the Stingers took to the court but they went from strength to strength as they gained confidence.

The first quarter saw the Stingers take an early lead, pulling clear by three goals.

Heeding Captain Scarlett King’s advice, they kept a cool head and played their own game. Passing was kept tight, avoiding costly unforced errors, allowing the Stingers to keep possession and move the ball successfully down towards their shooting circle. Player of the match was goal shooter Chloe Mordue and she and Totie Southwell, in goal attack, were both on fine form, moving around the circle, passing the ball between them and shooting well.

Claire Priddy, wing attack, and Scarlett King were working hard to find great space and feed the ball into the shooters which they did to great effect.

In the second quarter, Storm rallied and closed down the Stingers’ lead to one goal at half-time. Back on court for the second half, the defence were determined to keep the Storm out of the shooting circle and Sarah Roberts, goal defence, and Clare McCarthy, wing defence, did a good job of blocking their goal attack, while goalkeeper Chanti Stubbs used her height in the circle to put pressure on their shooter.

The Stingers then went three goals ahead at the end of the third quarter which saw them full of confidence going into the fourth.

With a solid defence, great passing up the court and impressive shooting, the Stingers increased their lead substantially, scoring 13 goals to Storm’s seven and securing a well-deserved victory.
