Drivers warned not to drink and drive
Published 10/12/12

A CAMPAIGN to reduce drink-driving over Christmas has been launched by Thames Valley Police.

“Don’t get smashed, grab a cab” is aimed at reducing the number of people killed and injured on the roads by people who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police will be carrying out random drink, speed and seatbelt checks throughout the month, day and night.

Supt Chris Brown, head of roads policing, said: “Drinking and driving wrecks lives, most obviously the hundreds of victims who are killed each year and their loved ones.

“It also changes the lives of the people who are selfish or stupid enough to drive when they are not fit to do so.”

Last year, 7,720 drivers were breathalysed by Thames Valley Police during December and 299 were arrested after testing positive.

This was a 15 per cent increase on 2010 when 5,156 people were arrested and 261 tested positive.

Police say that if you are planning a night out, then do not drive to the venue and book a taxi to take you home, use public transport or stay overnight. Never offer an alcoholic drink to someone who is driving.

If you suspect anyone of drink-driving, call the police non-emergency number of 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
