Councillors opposed to boundary changes
Published 07/01/13

A FORMAL protest has been lodged by Sonning Common Parish Council against plans to change the electoral ward boundary.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England is proposing that Kidmore End be taken out of the ward and that the parishes of Eye and Dunsden, Binfield Heath, Shiplake and Harpsden are added.

This would reduce the number of electors from 5,666 to 5,606.

The plans are designed to help reduce the total number of South Oxford district councillors by a quarter from 48 to 36 and are due to be implemented in 2015.

Sonning Common would still be represented by two district councillors but the parish council fears they may no longer come from the village. The current councillors, Paul Harrison and Alan Rooke, live in Orchard Close and Baskerville Road respectively.

In a statement, the council said it “strongly opposes” the proposals. It said: “Sonning Common is one of the largest villages in South Oxfordshire. It is a discrete centre in its own right and needs focused representation.

“Under the commission’s proposals, Shiplake could end up providing two district councillors to represent Sonning Common. Shiplake residents have no practical, day-to-day links here — their services are found in Henley.”

The council has put up posters around the village urging residents to write to the commission objecting to the plans.

Parish chairman Douglas Kedge said Shiplake also opposed the plans.
