HENLEY has a reputation for being a wealthy town but the owner of the new Giggling Squid Thai restaurant in Hart Street has been surprised by the demand for expensive drinks.
Andy Laurillard tells me some customers complained that his wine list, comprising bottles priced between £13 and £20, was not posh enough.
He then introduced a “broker’s list” of wines priced between £20 and £30 and sold 20 cases in two nights.
Now he has introduced a £30 to £50 list — and is still being urged to sell a “decent” bottle of champagne.
As if this didn’t prove how well-to-do some of his customers are, Mr Laurillard noticed that one evening there were six chauffeurs waiting outside for their clients to finish eating. I hope the diners all left tips!
