Council opposed to Tesco car wash plan
Published 08/04/13

A CAR wash could open in the car park of the Tesco store in Henley.

A planning application has been made to convert nine parking spaces into a hand car wash and valeting service with a canopy and an office.

The business would be open from 8am to 7pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Henley Town Council has recommended that the application is refused.

Councillor Dieter Hinke, chairman of the planning committee, said he believed car washes should be on industrial estates and he was concerned about the impact on neighbours.

He said: “Twenty spaces along to the left there are two houses with large gardens,” he said. “It could be quite detrimental to the people living in these houses, particularly when they are sitting in their gardens.”

Councillor Martin Akehurst said: “It would make the car park even smaller when it is already very full at weekends.”

Councillor Sam Evans suggested the recent expansion of a car wash on the Newtown industrial estate was evidence of the demand.

South Oxfordshire District Council is expected to make a decision by May 7.

Plans to open a car wash in the car park at Henley Hockey Club, which is owned by the town council, were refused permission last year.

Plans by Ali Shafi, from Slough, to open a car wash in the car park at Henley Hockey Club, which is owned by the town council and next to Tesco, were refused permission last year.

In February last year, the council gave permission for Brian Preddy and Arshid Mahmood to operate a car wash at Henley Rugby Club.
