Actor David Suchet has stepped into the row over plans to sell off lock-keepers’ houses.
Best known for his portrayal of Agatha Christie’s detective, Poirot, Mr. Suchet is protesting in his role as chairman of the River Thames Alliance.
Back in November last year the Standard revealed that the Environment Agency was considering axing lock-keepers and putting their homes on the market.
Confirmation came earlier this year when the agency confirmed it was looking to lay off 16 keepers and get rid of 22 houses.
Following furious protests from river users the agency had a re-think and announced it would put off its decision until January.
Mr. Suchet said he was ‘implacably’ against the plan and that his postbag was full of informed comment unanimously opposed to the proposed moves. I am urging the Environmental Agency to reconsider this matter," he said. "All proposed action on the sale or renting out of lock premises must cease.
"All options to improve the management and service on the River Thames must be collated by stake holders and the Environmental Agency.
