Students put their best foot forward to raise funds
Published 27/01/14

STUDENTS and staff at The Henley College helped to raise more than 5,000 for a wide range of charities and causes last term.

Nearly 1,000 was raised for Oxfam as part of the charity’s Oxjam and Send A Sheep campaigns, whilst the Student Union raised more than 150 for Children In Need through a fancy-dress themed collection.

Business students raised an impressive 3,000 as part of Sue Ryder’s Big Wigs business challenge. Organised activities ranged from a charity golf day in Reading to a successful event at Henley’s Over 60s Club.

Students and staff from the College’s Pathways Department, which supports students with learning difficulties and disabilities, raised more than 500 through a wide range of activities including a popular tombola and raffle.

The college’s Amnesty Youth Group raised both money and awareness for women’s rights with activities including a lively December music event. At the same time staff raised funds for the Philippines Typhoon appeal through a charity raffle.

Players from The Henley College’s London Wasps academy side took part in a series of weekly activities to support the Mayor’s community projects. Initiatives included litter-picking, running fitness classes, and helping at the Christmas Festival and late night shopping event.

This month, music students will return to the Kenton Theatre for a special concert, helping to raise funds for the Henley Youth Centre.

College principal, Tom Espley, said: “I am both proud and impressed by the commitment from our students and staff in highlighting the vital work of a wide range of charities and to raising much needed funds for these causes.

“Congratulations and thank you to everyone who has been involved.”
