Developer signs 16m hospital rebuild deal
Published 12/05/14

THE contract to build the new Townlands Hospital in Henley has been awarded.

Amber Solutions for Care has agreed a 16million deal with VINCI Construction to build the “health campus”.

The 2.36 hectare development will include a new 18-bed community hospital, a 64-bed care home and a 12-bed palliative care unit.

The construction company will be the principal contractor for the project and provide maintenance for 25 years. Townlands will remain fully operational for the duration of the two-year build, which began last month.

The new care home, which is moving from Chilterns End in Greys Road, has a construction value of 6.1million and will be owned and operated by Oxfordshire County Council and the Orders of St John Care Trust.

The new hospital will be parly funded through the release of excess land and buildings for development of 44 assisted-living residencies and 12 key worker homes.Alan Oliver, VINCI operations director, said: “Bringing the project to this stage has been challenging and taken a great deal of co-ordination between ourselves, Amber, the NHS and other stakeholders.

“I am delighted that the result has enabled us to provide and maintain excellent health and social care facilities for residents and patients in Henley. Developing the overall site in this way is an incredibly innovative approach. It ensures that the NHS receives optimal value for money and we hope that this success can be seen as the exemplar for similar projects nationwide.”

Mike Leto, Amber’s bid director, said: “The Townlands project makes excellent use of NHS estate to deliver an integrated health campus that will meet existing and future health requirements.”

•Members of the Townlands Steering Group are to meet representatives from Amber to plan a ground-breaking ceremony.
