A NEW member spoke about his life during the May meeting at Badgemore Golf Club.
Phillip Emerton was born in Abingdon and then moved with his family to Goring.
His ambition at school was to go up to Oxford but polio forced him to change his mind and the direction of his life.
Having left school early, he found work with an accounting firm in Reading.
After five years, he had passed all the exams but his life’s path took him into the Royal Artillery for National Service. He was expecting to be posted to Hong Kong but went instead to Salisbury Plain.
By now, Phillip had met his future wife but there was no immediate thought of settling down. He was posted to the School of Artillery and travelled extensively.
It wasn’t until his National Service came to an end that Phillip married Mary and he joined another accounting firm in Reading.
Once he became a senior partner, Phillip set about expanding the business by taking over other businesses.
He retired in 1994 to enjoy his family, skiing, trout fishing and life in France. During this time, Mary died. In time, Phillip met and married Kate who was in the antiques business and life changed again.
