Spectators will receive free admission at this year’s Town and Visitors’ Regatta, which takes place on Saturday.
The event is based on the riverside lawns of the Henley Royal Regatta and originated in the 1850s as a competition for local clubs only. When it was opened to crews from other towns, its name was changed from Henley Town Regatta to Henley Town and Visitors’ Regatta.
More than 160 crews from 33 clubs have entered this year, covering the full range of boat sizes and abilities from novice single scullers to elite eights. Large squads are coming from local clubs Henley and Upper Thames, but the largest is from Vesta Rowing Club in London. It seems likely that these clubs will go head-to-head to win the Sutherland Cup and £750 prize that will be awarded to the most successful club on the day.
Regatta president Peter Sly said: "I am very proud to be president of such an historic event. While sport may be the main focus, we also provide an opportunity for Henley folk to come and enjoy the magnificent riverside lawns belonging to the Royal Regatta. Admission is free and there is no need to dress up in the enclosure.
