HENLEY has said a fond farewell to one of its favourite sons — town councillor and former mayor Terry Buckett MBE.
Cllr Buckett, known to everyone who knew him as Terry, finally lost an eight-month battle with cancer in the early hours of Tuesday last week. He was 56.
An estimated 600 people packed into St Mary’s Church on Tuesday for the full civic funeral given by the town council at the request of the postman’s widow, Pauline, because he was a serving councillor.
Mrs Buckett and the couple’s two grown-up children, Lee and Donna, were joined by friends, work colleagues and fellow town councillors in a procession from the steps of the town hall to the parish church in Hart Street.Passers-by watched as the mourners followed the gleaming hearse carrying Terry’s coffin and floral tributes, including one with huge yellow letters spelling "Bruv".
It was a fitting tribute for a man held in great affection by many people, especially his colleagues on the town council that he loved unashamedly.
One man who spent an hour with a friend waiting to see the procession said: "We knew Terry, we all knew Terry. He was a good ’un."
