TRIBUTES have been paid to the founder of Upper Thames Rowing Club in Henley who died on Monday, aged 87.
Peter Sutherland set up the club with wife Diane in 1963.
He coached the Great Britain eight at the 1960 Rome Olympics and was captain of Leander Club from 1960 to 1962.
Great Britain rowing coach Jurgen Grobler said: “I remember him as an oarsman, a rower. It was his life, building up rowing and building up Upper Thames.
“His big dream was always getting the youngsters on board and giving them good training and having success with them.
“He was always very nice to talk to and his dedication to rowing was outstanding — a very helpful guy.”
An obituary will be published in this week’s Henley Standard.
