FAB farewell to Thunderbirds' Gerry Anderson
Published 11/01/13

HUNDREDS of people turned out to pay tribute to the creator of Thunderbirds today.

Gerry Anderson, who died on Boxing Day aged 83, was laid to rest after a humanist ceremony at Henley Road crematorium in Caversham.

Fans of the Seventies TV show joined family, friends and former colleagues in filling the chapel to overflowing.

The coffin was adorned with a floral tribute spelling "FAB", the catchphrase of his Thunderbirds characters, as well as a model of Thunderbirds 2.

It was carried by six pallbearers, including Mr Anderson’s son Jamie, who later read out a tribute.

A selection of his favourite songs were played, including Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, as the coffin was carried inside.

Other tributes were read out during the service including one from Shane Rimmer, the voice of Scott Tracy in Anderson’s hit show.

Nick Williams, chairman of the Fanderson fan club and John Gore, a broadway producer who started his career working with Mr Anderson, provided further reflections on his life.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, also paid tribute to Mr Anderson, who was diagnosed with dementia two years ago and helped to raise £1 million for the charity.

Following the service, which was led by humanist celebrant Ray Owen, the Thunderbirds March was played amid applause from mourners.

After the ceremony, a reception was held at Phyllis Court Club in Henley.
