Pupils mark jubilee with tree planting
Published 07/02/13

PUPILS from Piggott junior and infant schools took part in a service of blessing for an oak tree given to the schools to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Rev Jon Drake, curate of St Mary’s Church, conducted the service in Mumbery field, Wargrave, on Tuesday.

Children from both school councils sang an adapted version of Thank You, Lord, For This Fine Day before enjoying a tea party back at school.

Jill Nixon, deputy head of the infant school, said: “We use this area regularly as a sports field and the adjoining wildlife area so it will be a focal point for both schools.”

Sally Akers, headteacher of both schools, said: “We are very grateful for the gift of the jubilee oak tree. The children will be able to watch it grow and change with the seasons.”

The tree is one of 60 which are being planted by Wokingham Borough Council to mark the jubilee and Wokingham District Veteran Tree Association helped choose the sites. The trees will be professionally tended for five years.
