RESIDENTS of South Oxfordshire who use the brown bin service without paying for it are being offered an amnesty.
It costs £40 a year to have garden waste collected every fortnight by the district councilís contractor.
Over the past year, the council and neighbouring Vale of White Horse district council collected 1,100 brown bins from residents who no longer pay for the service or inherited a bin from a previous occupant of their home but havenít signed up to the service themselves.
Now the councils are offering residents who still have a bin but donít pay for it the chance to give it up or to arrange to pay by direct debit. Residents must sign up by September 13.
They are also offering a 10 per cent discount to new customers and existing ones wanting a second bin until October 31.
David Dodds, cabinet member for waste at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: "The vast majority of our garden waste customers pay for the service properly and honestly, so itís not right that others might want to get away without paying."
