A WOMAN will be taking part in this year’s Ride and Stride event on Saturday on her horse.
Jane Havelock will ride Brandy from St Margaret’s Church in Mapledurham to St Peter’s Church in Caversham, where she worships.
She will be among sponsored walkers and cyclists who will be visiting as many churches as possible to collect donations towards the £100,000 needed to replace the dilapidated organ at St Peter’s.
Ride and Stride was started many years ago by friend of Sir John Betjeman to help maintain historic churches in Norfolk and has since spread to many other parts of the country. It is supported by the Historic Churches Trust and the Royal County of Berkshire Churches Trust. Half of the money raised goes towards the costs of repairs at selected historic churches of all denominations and the other half to the church nominated by the participant.
A team from All Saints’ Church in Peppard will be visiting churches in Oxford.
Ian Fraser, who will be leading the group with his wife Pat, said: “The city provides a wonderful opportunity to visit many places of worship, including college chapels.
“Three years ago I managed a total of 50 but Anno Domini suggests there is no chance we will match that total this time but we will be pounding the streets for eight hours.”
